Most tennis fans are already looking forward to the great match-ups at the 2013 US Open such as possible quarterfinal clash between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer but there are also some highly interesting duels already in the first round, matches that deserve our attention. Here is a list of the most interesting first round matches at the 2013 US Open:
Stanislas Wawrinka vs. Radek Stepanek
Right, Czech Radek Stepanek is already 34 and one of the oldest players in the Top 100 but he is still a tremendously difficult first round opponent for Swiss Nr. 2 Stanislas Wawrinka. Stepanek with his vast experience, unorthodox style of play and excellent touch at the net will like his chances at these relatively fast hard courts in Flushing Meadows, where he reached the 4th round in 2009. In contrary to him Stanislas Wawrinka comes into this match with a poor 2-4 record since Wimbledon and will have to overturn his negative Head 2 Head balance with the Czech if he plans to reach the second round. Stepanek won all five previous meetings of this pair, winning 10 out of 12 sets played. Not an easy task to predict a winner here but this match can easily go the distance.
Jiri Vesely vs. Denis Kudla
Two of the most promising young talents of the ATP World Tour also meet in the first round of the 2013 US Open. This is the career-first direct entry to a Grand Slam event for the 20-year-old Czech player Jiri Vesely who climed more than 200 places in the rankings since the beginning of the season as currently finds himself on a career-high Nr. 82. And there is no doubt that he has the potential to continue his fast progress. Also former world Nr. 3 junior player, Denis Kudla, a player with Ukrainian origin, is making nice progress in 2013. Kudla reached the final at the US Open juniors in 2010, losing to countryman Jack Sock, and will be highly motivated to get his career-first victory at the US Open Tennis Championships.
Kirsten Flipkens vs. Venus Williams
The 27-year-old Belgian Kirsten Flipkens is currently living her tennis dream. A player that was ranked just inside Top 200 at the beginning of 2012 and battling more with various injuries than rivals on tennis courts is now on her career-high ranking of world Nr. 13 after reaching the semifinals in Wimbledon this year. Achievements that even Flipken's hardcore fans would hardly predict. But there is no doubt that she got the most dangerous first round opponent for any seeded player as she will play a former world Nr. 1 and a seven-times Grand Slam champion Venus Williams in the first round of the 2013 US Open Tennis Championships. Right, Venus Williams is just a shadow of her from previous years and won just one match on the WTA Tour since late April but she is still a big champion with enormous experience. The two have already met once this year with Flipkens winning in three sets despite loosing the first set 0-6. The match will be probably played on one of the big courts and this could be only an advantage for Williams as she will take energy from the American crowd and we can see her raise the level of her play and advance to the next round.
