World number one Serena Williams was able to win her seventh Miami title with success in the 2014 Sony Open where she beat Li Na in the final on Saturday.
The American secured the victory against Na in straight sets 7-5 6-1. Apart from the tight opener, Williams was dominant to surpass Andre Agassi's record in this event for the most number of wins. Before this year she jointly held that record with six triumphs each.
Na had plenty of success early in the game in the final. She held a two break advantage at one stage and led 5-2. However, Williams fought back to win five consecutive games to secure it 7-5.
The former Grand Slam winner from China was unable to match the Betfair ante-post favourite in the second set and had to settle for the runner-up prize in the tournament.
Williams continued her excellent record against Na to 11 wins from their 12 encounters. She has not been beaten by the world number two in six years. The 32-year old won her first Miami Masters trophy in 2002. That brought up the opening leg of a consecutive hat-trick of titles there. She was also successful in 2007 and 2008, while this year brings up another successful defence as she lifted the trophy in 2013.
Williams will be hoping she will be able to add to her 59th WTA tournament win when she takes part in the three remaining Grand Slams in 2014. Her next chance to do so will be in the French Open in May.
In 2013, Williams won two of the major tournaments in tennis as she was victorious at Roland Garros and in her home Slam at Flushing Meadows.
